Great tips! There's also another alternative to those bogging stars. I don't remember the name of the plugin (for Wordpress) but it will automatically rate your posts so visitors can see what are the more popular ones that they should visit.

Big, in-your-face advertising is annoying as it is... even if it isn't slowing down your blog. So you definitely did the right thing by taking those off. Widgets are so tempting though since there are so many of them and often the thought of them are so fun.

There are lots of things you could do to avoid having those little stars, but if you still need a rating system, I would recommend to place it on your article page instead of your blog main page.
